Being Self-Taught Can Be A Hard Thing, But A Good Thing...

Living From Glory To Glory, Laura Ashley Pattern

Self- Taught in just about everything!
I am going to make this pattern in a mock first using
A nice cotton muslin fabric first!
Before I start cutting out the pattern on the pretty
fabric I purchased for this Laura Ashley pattern!

Singer Seweing Machine, Living From Glory To Glory Blog

I've had this sewing machine forever,

Nothing fancy but it's strong and reliable!

Being self-taught is a bit of a challenge!

I think we have stopped handing down many things

To the next generation!

Rag Rugs, Living From Glory To Glory Blog...

Over the years I have told myself, you can do this!
Now, grant you I may be in the category
"Jack of all trades and master of none"

But it has not stopped me from trying and learning!

I bought a beautiful piano and I'm still trying to teach myself.
I have had two different teachers that both lasted maybe a month.

I've taken watercolor painting classes in person and online.

I have been doing some sewing again after 30 years;
Sewing up some cotton jumpers!
The patterns might as well be written in Japanese!
Even the pictures are confusing?!#

But, the point I am trying to make is this;
We can learn new things without an instructor or teacher!
Mind you it would be nice to have some help.
But, in reality no one has time anymore.

One thing we have are helpful videos on the internet!
We can order books to teach ourselves!

Never stop short of learning a new skill;
Or advancing to a new level!
And remember it is so good for our brains too
Learn new skills and to follow directions.

I was not born with natural abilities in sewing or painting
But I didn't let it stop me from trying...

And we can help someone else to just try to learn
A new hobby or craft!
Share what you have learned!

I have this memory of my Mother teaching herself;
Of many things knitting, sewing, canning!
But while she was still here, I failed to learn from her
As much as I should have.

May we always be teachable of the things of the Lord.
But yet not afraid to dig deep into His Word all by ourselves.

Never stop creating beauty in your heart and your home!

Oh, I forgot to mention the one crafty thing that I have just
Had a ball doing, and it's called "Junk Journaling"
It's so much fun and relaxing!
I need to do a little post on this craft very soon!

What is a craft or project you have learned or taught yourself??

  1. My girls, Mandy and Piper, are both junk journaling for the summer. It looks like a lot of fun. My grandma taught me the basic crochet stitch of single crochet before she died. I had to teach myself the other stitches as well as how to read a pattern. Then I wanted to learn to knit so used YouTube videos to learn. I've been sewing VERY BASIC things for years but I also taught myself that skill. Dennis bought me a. Kenmore sewing machine from Sears the first Christmas we were married 47 years ago. I still use it and make all of my dresses that I wear every day with it.
    I taught myself to cook, bake, canning, just about every skill I have is self taught. It sure does keep the brain active!
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  2. I taught myself crocheting. I'm grateful for YouTube videos. I taught myself sewing using Mennonite homeschool curriculum AND I'm still learning. I can't do sleeves and zippers but I hope to work on the lessons from the books. And again YouTube is very helpful. The scariest thing I taught myself was pressure canning. I named my pressure canned Little Berths because she looked so menacing with all those parts on the lid. I have learned even though its fun to learn new skills with a friend sometimes you just have to go at it alone and teach yourself.

  3. What a fun and delightful post, Roxy. Yes, we can learn without a teacher. I learned to make dishcloths by watching a simple video on our to knit a simple square dishcloth.
    The Lord gave me the desire and talent to watercolor...but I needed to learn so much and had a really good teacher that improved my work completely. I haven't done any sewing for a long time as I gave my machine to a grandson who wanted to learn to sew. In fact, he's an adult and made me an apron last Christmas. Many of the things I used to do, are for that time, and now at my age...and being a caregiver, I have to limit my activities. But if you saw my current post, I'm teaching a young woman some of the tricks and recipes I love to make.

  5. Goodness...I sure admire those who have the talents of sewing. My mom could sew, but I really never took the time for her to teach me. I look back and I sure wish I had. The pattern photo in this post brought back memories. When I was growing up, our very little town did have a fabric store. I loved going in that shop not only to look at patterns for dresses that my mom would make, but also, for the scent of all the fabrics in the store...they smelled so fresh.
